Dear Jodi fan!

Congratulations to the winner of the Nineteen Minutes competition

The winner will receive a delicious chocolate hamper

WINNER
Cherise, Vic:
I would recommend Jodi writes a novel with a storyline along the lines of a murder committed by a mentally handicapped person. I believe Jodi could pull heart strings with her wonderful use of words and attatchment to characters and would discuss the issues of the handicapped society.

RUNNERS-UP
Nancee, Vic: Exploring the issue of donor egg/sperm/embryos and the identity issues that may arise for the child born out of this technology eg: not knowing your genetic, cultural background - possibility of unknowingly dating a sibling - I think these issues raise a lot of social issues. Melanie, NZ: A 25 year old female teacher falls in love and starts a relationship with a 15 year old student and becomes pregnant. Jodi could write the story from either the teacher's point of view or the students or both. The story could also centre around how the community reacts when this news story breaks (the teacher gets arrested). Kate, Qld: I think a book exploring a character with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder would be a good idea. I am a teenager with Asperser’s Syndrome, and I know that it is a widely misunderstood condition. Jodi has a way with exploring issues and making people think and I would love it if she wrote about ASDs.

To enter the competition, all you have to do is tell us in 50 words or less...
If you had the chance to give Jodi Picoult an idea/subject for her next novel, what would it be and why?

This is your chance to tell Jodi about your great idea for a novel! We'll be asking Jodi to help judge the competition and pick out the winning entry. The competition closes on Friday 25th May and is open to residents of Australia and New Zealand only. Please read the terms and conditions of entry at www.jodipicoult.com.au.

Reviews: Nineteen Minutes

Article by Christopher Bantick in The Courier Mail:

"While Nineteen Minutes was written well before the events in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University this week, the novel has a chilling aptness and resonance. Something helped by the fact that this week marks the eighth anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.
Apposite as Picoult's book is, with what can only be seen as unfortunate timing but a promotional gift, Nineteen Minutes may go some way to offering an explanation of what appears utterly senseless."

From The Sydney Morning Herald / The Age:

"Moral dilemmas are Jodi Picoult's forte. The author of 14 bestsellers, she enjoys exploring provocative issues - date rape, mercy killing and genetic manipulation, for example - from all angles. In Nineteen Minutes, she tackles a peculiarly American tragedy, the school shooting, going inside the mind of a teenage killer to find a bullied child.
Picoult is on a book tour in a quiet town in Iowa, full of "healthy, scrubbed, blond, blue-eyed kids", which, she says, believes itself immune to school violence. "But this is where school shootings happen. Because it's when you peel back the surface that you see the same underbelly of life in high school ... Adolescence is about fitting in, not standing out. We're naive if we tell ourselves it won't happen in our home town."
